Madison is home to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, as well as Edgewood College, Madison Area Technical College, Herzing College, and Madison Media Institute, all of which give the city a student population of almost 50,000. The UOW contributes to the vast majority with roughly 41,000 students, making it one of the largest public universities in the United States. It's consistently rated among the top public post-secondary schools in the country and contains outstanding courses, professors and programs. Sports are a major part of the campus experience at the university for both intramural and intercollegiate. The University's athletic teams are nicknamed "The Badgers" and have often been rated as the best in the United States, drawing many of the residents to their contests.
The Madison Metropolitan School District serves the city and the surrounding area with an enrollment of about 25,000 students in 46 schools. Madison has more than six times the National Merit Scholar Semifinalists than other school districts.
The 5 public high schools are: James Madison Memorial, Madison West, Madison East, Madison LaFollette, and Malcolm Shabazz City High School.
Each of Madison's high schools is known widely throughout the state for their unique and special attributes. For example, James Madison Memorial has a four-time state champion forensics team.
The most notable of the private schools is Edgewood High School that is located on the Edgewood college campus, as well as Wingra School, which contain students from Kindergarten to grade 8. |
